Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Hiring/Booking Ash K. & Fees

What are your rates/what does it cost to book a magician?

Ash K. charges what all full-time, professional magicians in the San Francisco Bay Area charge, from a simple, $195 pre-school & kindergarten home party package, to elaborate shows for hundreds of people. Birthday party prices are explained on the “Parties” page. Having said that, you will find lots of magicians out there: “Many cheaper, none better.”

How do I hire/book Ash K., or get a proposal for a larger event like library, school, multi-family, and grad night shows?

Three easyfast ways:

  1. To save $25 on your kids party, fill out the form called, “Book Ash K.” on the home page.
  2. For a larger event or strolling magic, click here: check availability
  3. For non-kids parties, call! If we can’t take your call, leave us the event details, and we’ll call back to make sure Ash K. will be there for your guests! Tel: 415.922.5446

Do I really save $35-45 just by filling out the home party form???

Yep – probably more if you’ve already shopped around. By booking & paying online, it saves us all lots of time by not playing phone-tag. We appreciate it, and pass on that savings to you! The prices posted presume that you’ve filled out the form.

Our calling price is $35-45 more than the posted price for just filling out this form: Book Ash K.

How do I book Ash K. for a birthday or kids party?

We make it as easy as we can for you the customer to get us the info so we can get his show to you!

1. Click on the form http://ash4kids.com/book-ash-k-14/

2. Fill it out completely. If you don’t know something, just guess, and make a note in the notes section. This is NOT rocket science, and you will NOT be graded on anything (unless you give us a wrong kid’s name, time, date, or venue!).

3. Be sure you’ve included your cell phone number so we can text/confirm.

3. When you have done this, Kevin the manager gets pinged, and checks Ash K.’s schedule. If available for that slot (which is the case MOST of the time), he asks for a deposit and contract signature; if a conflict, he suggests a couple of other times.

4. Just follow the instructions: get your deposit in (PayPal, the super-secure mechanism, works with all major credit cards). If uncomfortable with that, ping Kevin, and we’ll give you a mailing address to send in your check. Deposits are for half the total amount.

5. When Kevin gets both of those (signature & deposit), he’ll email you confirming your slot is now booked.

6. A few days before the show, he’ll remind you by email, including reminders from the contract about how to get ready.

7. Please then have a check or cash for the balance for Ash K. when he arrives, as well as a parking spot.

It’s just a kid’s party – enjoy it! All of these stages are in the instructions you’ll get, step-by-step. We’ve made it easy, and include this FAQ in case you’re anxious about what will happen.

What do I need to think about when planning to have Ash K. in my home?

A few simple things (and we have never been in a home “too small” for a great show!):

  • wall or screen behind him, and places for everyone to sit where they can see him. Believe it or not, he’s shown up to places where this wasn’t set up.

  • Space! About six feet by 12 feet. If not sure, your arm-span for the width of his stange, and twice that for the length. That’s for him: make sure your guests have a place to sit.

  • A place for Ash K. to park. He has between 50 and 200 lbs. of equipment, so please save a space with a cone, chair, or actual car, and make his day!

  • Privacy. To amaze you later, he needs to set up undisturbed in the room where he’ll be performing. A separate room is ideal; a curtain across a rope is just fine. He also needs privacy when putting his equipment away.

  • Timing. We recommend scheduling the show towards the beginning of the party, to encourage guests to be punctual. And please save food and drink for later: it avoids spills and stains on your furniture and rug, and prevents “food comas.”

  • Ash K. brings everything. Don’t worry about him needing tables, chairs, rugs, etc. We’re glad to be welcome in your home, and he comes prepared to do the job!

I just have ONE question about a home, birthday party show!

We promise the answer is on this page. Seriously. We do this stuff 24/7.

Where will Ash K. perform/how far will he travel?

Chiefly in the Nine-County San Francisco Bay Area, from SF to Palo Alto; Berkeley to Healdsburg; Fremont to Walnut Creek; Contra Costa to Mill Valley; Calistoga to Santa Cruz; San Jose to Hillsborough; Napa to Newark; Oakland to Novato; Petaluma to Atherton.

But really, anyplace with paved roads & airports – even that is negotiable – is fine.

(Ash K. was once flown to a remote ranch).

As any time that Ash K. is traveling is time he’s not performing, we must charge 50¢ per mile for the first 100 miles, then $1.00 per mile thereafter.

What is the price for a kids party outside my house or home?

Not a problem: many of our shows are at venues other than a client’s house or home.

When you fill out the booking form, note how many kids are coming. Over 20 kids is a great deal – just another $4 per kid (about what your pizza is costing you), and adults are always free.

Our larger shows (for libraries, schools, business events, etc.) or shows where people want Ash to stroll through the crowd doing magic are priced differently than home magic shows.

Isn’t Ash K’s humor a little sophisticated for kids?

Like Disney & Pixar movies, Ash K’s show is written for both the kids AND the adults. Also, kids are more observant than many adults might think – quiz them after a show, and you’d be amazed what they caught that the adults missed!

Is my living room big enough for the show?

In 20 years and hundreds of performances, we have yet to cancel due to a too-small of room.

: )

Just make as much room as possible for him to stand, the kids to sit on the floor, and the teenagers & adults to sit in the back.

What if I want the show outdoors?

You will still have a great show, but the wind and sun are not your guests’ friends.

Of course, we’re eager to be part of your day: just make sure everybody is in the shade (100% of the time), and out of the wind, including Ash K., and you’re on!

Whenever possible, indoors is better, but Ash has done dozens of shows outdoors – either way, your experience will be unforgettable!

What does he do in his show/what kind of magic does he do/what’s his show like?

Always in his hilarious way, Ash does every kind of magic, from making things disappear & appear, magically restore them after their complete destruction, float them, or even reveal audience members secret thoughts! Please enjoy our video to see for yourself.

Besides being a complete crack-up, Ash K. always involves both the kids as audience members and as volunteers.

“Some cheaper, none better.”

How long is his show?

Ash would happily perform the whole day, but little kids (4-6) need to move after about 30 minutes, and bigger kids about 45 minutes. For our educational programs (that kids & teachers are prepared for), they’re longer, typically from an hour to ninety minutes. For strolling magic (such as at Grad Nights & street fairs, during which Ash K. strolls amongst your guests), we require a two-hour minimum.

Who are some of your clients/where can we see Ash?

The majority of his performances, just like your event for which you might considering Ash K., are not open to the public. But Ash does perform all over the place, and here are some public events where you might have seen him:

  • Peninsula Symphony, Palo Alto

  • San Francisco Public Libraries

  • Holiday Tea, Fairmont Hotel, San Francisco

  • Metropolitan Club, San Francisco

  • San Francisco Symphony’s Holiday Program, Deck the Halls

  • Chabot Space & Science Center

  • Alameda County Libraries

  • Sausalito Art Festival

  • San Jose Libraries

Does Ash K. produce a rabbit from a hat?

Though our friends who do use live animals in their show take pains to make the animals comfortable, we feel that if you had a brain the size of a pea, and were stuffed into a small, dark space for about an hour, and suddenly a hand came in and grabbed you and brought you out into a room of excited, children, who are screaming in excitement … you might not like it.

So we leave the bunnies alone.

More about Ash K.

Where is Ash K. from, and how did he get that name?

Ash K. was born in Balka, which is slightly East of Poland. Don’t try to find it on a map though: Liechtenstein looks like a vast empire compared to Balka. Ash’s full name is “Ashkenazi,” which most Americans find more or less impossible to say and remember, so he gave up, and had it surgically shortened. As to his title (”the Pretty Good”), his first manager hired a very inexpensive, and utterly incompetent translator, and as Ash had no idea that his correct title had been, shall we say, “mishandled” until about two years after his first gigs, it was by then too late to take back.

Please don’t ask him what his correct title was – he sulks for a day or so afterwards – but let’s just say that “the Pretty Good” fell a little short, and we’ve since dropped it from his name.

What’s your job like?

For Ash K. or any performer, a typical small show is six hours of our effort, from the time Kevin (his manager) works with you on your event details, to Ash K. loading the equipment, driving, setting-up, of course doing the show, breaking-down, returning home, and loading-out. Of course, Kevin spends many hours a week on all of the business aspect of the work, and Ash K. is weekly found studying, researching, and practicing many hours to hone his craft.

How long does Ash K. spend grooming his mustache?

Typically, fifteen minutes a day, which candidly is MUCH more time than he spends on a day on card magic. He is horrifically vain.

Where did Ash K. learn German & French?

Ash K. lived and worked in France and Austria. Kevin would like to point out that though he too speaks the same languages and lived in those two countries, it is a fantastic coincidence beyond his control.

How did Ash get into magic? What about his Manager, Kevin?

Ash’s grand-father was a professional magician, and his father was an accountant. He therefore did the proper thing and allowed the impractical gene to skip a generation.

Kevin was interested in magic as a lad (as many are), and stopped doing it when he entered college to pursue very serious matters, which he did for some fifteen years before he accepted that he was better suited to un-serious matters.

What about his business partner, Kevin Madden’s history?

Kevin A. Madden was born in South Lake Tahoe, California, and is the fourth generation that he knows of, on both sides his family, to get paid for playing music. He was raised by parents who had worked for or performed with Igor Stravinsky, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis, Jr., Sarah Vaughn, Billy Eckstine, Glenn Campell, Hoagy Carmichael, Woody Herman’s Herd, the Gregg Smith Singers, Bob Florence, Harry James, Stan Getz, and Buddy Rich. If you don’t know who those people are, you will be unimpressed, and he can live with that.

He is not only the son of two professional musicians, but both of his parents’ grandparents were professional musicians as well: one great-great-grandparent played in the Czar’s army; another great-grandparent was in John Phillip Sousa’s Band. If you don’t know who those two people are, he thinks you should turn off the TV and read more books, but will not publicly say so because of his good boundaries.

As a child, Kevin’s other interests included (predictably) magic. His first business card was given to him as a gift by an aunt who daily prays for forgiveness. Kevin quit doing magic professionally when he went to college to do “serious” things, and has since lived in Davis, Boston, Vienna, Paris, a small town in Austria named Mattersburg, Napa, Petaluma, and he moved to San Francisco in 1999 to be an arts education administrator. He also taught music for many years in several Bay Area school districts.

Kevin attended UC Davis, intending to major in Political Science and minor in Japanese language, and finished an English major speaking fluent French and German. He later demonstrated his famous financial genius, and borrowed excessive amounts of money to earn a Master’s degree in education while further studying jazz piano. After finishing these programs, and doing yet more serious things in arts education, he decided he was far more adept at doing at silly things.

Kevin lives with his carnivorous plants and magic books in San Francisco, annually rejects nominations for the A.D.D. Poster-Adult-of-the-Year, and is a tad shocked to find himself regularly exercising.
